“Temptation” by Matthew Dear // Beams (Out 8.28.12 via Ghostly)

Next week Matthew Dear will release his new album, Beams, and now you can hear the entire thing courtesy of Spin. Dear has been on the verge of a big crossover breakthrough for the past few years, and it would appear that this time around he’s crafted the album that could put him there. “Beams” is a stunner on most every level, swaying from charging electro rock to dark, haunting synth ballads, and every dancefloor in between. One of the highlights is the album closer, “Temptation” that feels somewhere between an LCD Soundsystem jam and a New Order jam by way of latter day David Bowie. It’s an absolutely killer closer for an album that never really lets up. Hypnotic beats bubble and pop, while shimmering synths cascade in and out over Dear’s Bowie-esque vocals that would feel at home on a TV on the Radio album. In a single song, it plays like one of the coolest mixtapes around. For me, this is one of the best jams of the year. I’m absolutely enthralled by “Beams”, but “Temptation” is something extra-special. Definitely seek out the full length.
