“Laketop Swimmers” by Sun Airway // Soft Fall (Out Now on Dead Oceans)

I am in love with work that Jon Barthmus and Patrick Marsceill put out as Sun Airway. It’s that simple. Sun Airway’s first full length was a beautiful, exciting, and ultimately underrated bit of music that soundtracked many of my late nights. Now, with the release of their stellar new album, “Soft Fall”, they have brought another batch of excellent songs to table and I can’t seem to pry myself away from them. The stunning, wide open sounds that are found on the album are easily some of the best that I’ve heard all year. They are able to take an intimate dream pop sound and blast it wide open, making it sound like it belongs in massive stadiums. The layered production and incredible mix that goes into each song creates such detailed pieces of art that it’s easy to get lost in one song picking up new things with every listen. “Laketop Swimmers” is just such a song. Vibrant and lush, with a melody that ducks when you think it’s going to swerve. It’s a stunning dream pop gem that proves that Sun Airway are doing it about as good as anyone could do it - and hopefully some day they’ll be the massive stars that they deserve. Do yourself a favor and spend some time with “Soft Fall”. It’s one of the year’s best albums.
